CENTRE STAGE
The Last Shift
An exciting new drama about to commence its Research and Development phase of creation. Written by Dr Mark Cainen, the play follows three generations set against the backdrop of the closure of Port Talbot's blast furnaces. Ewan, a 16 year-old boy struggling in school due to his dyslexia and mental health issues is being cared for by his grandfather, who is preparing to work his last shift at the steelworks. Then a letter arrives, offering clues as to where Ewan's absent mother has been all this time. Our research aims to connect with the people of Port Talbot and to hear authentic stories from local people, carers, neurodivergent folk, people with lived experience in the prison system and much more.
Memory, Meaning and the Unsaid
In partnership with Forget Me Not, Mark is running a one off workshop to guide people in their creative work for the stage and radio which tackles the subject of dementia. With the hope to educate, instruct and inspire writing on the lived and real experience of people with dementia, he is excited to work with and bring together a new community of people.
